As many have said of ONCE-OTHER, "Don't be fooled by the in-depth world building at the start. After it the pace accelerates rapidly."
It is a world that in many ways reflects our lives here on Earth. Partake of its beauty, its conflicts, its adventures, relationships, and the bravery of men and women who face death upon the endless desert sands of Here-Born -- a world of rock and sand, and sparsely populated by a hardy freedom loving people whose motto is LIVE BY NEATNESS ALONE!
This is the kind of book you read and wake up feeling as though you'd traveled to another world. The story is fast-paced and laced with powerful images. The plot, the exquisite writing, the awesome characters, and the mythical undertones of the story are elements that make it stand out as a work of great depth and success.

Truthfully I wanted to like this book, the bones of the story and the ideals it represents are solid. However, there are several things I found impeding my enjoyment of it. The way it is written is very fluid and at times almost poetry. Unfortunately in several instances, particularly during dialogue, I have no idea what the characters are talking about. The alien colloquialisms and phasing can get so heavy you don't understand it. At other times the fluidity of the writing can wind on to the point you're not sure what the underlying statement is. I also struggled with the character stating how important it was to succeed at his mission and then arbitrarily deciding to pull a prank and ruin it. (No spoilers but for those who have read it the canister "slip and fall" incident). I was also disappointed that every single scene was inundated with the political idealism of the story. Even with it being the linchpin of the story the lack of support from normal interactions and communication made it tedious at times. That being said you do empathize with the character and his culture. Later on the clarity improves as does the support for the politics. Once it reaches that point it moves more smoothly and is easier to digest. Overall it would be a wonderful read for those interested in sci-fy and politics. For pure fantasy/science-fiction lovers it may be too heavy on the ideals, but it certainly is a unique read.
“Once-Other” by Lawrence M Nysschens is a huge and highly ambitious writing project by a new author. It is apparently a science fiction epic divided between conditions on two very different worlds and is written in a deliberately stylised manner that requires a certain amount of perseverance to continue past the sometimes slow early chapters. The story itself is used more as a setting or background to air the author’s views, opinions, insights and challenges on a variety of political and socio-economic issues, and his conclusions for dealing with them. Whether anyone will agree with these views is open to question, but, the arguments presented by the author are delivered with conviction and passion and there are plenty of them. In fact, this 160,000 word long epic should give any interested and willing readers lots of opportunities to ponder and wonder about the amazing wealth of ideas on offer. So, welcome to the author’s brave new world – and read and enjoy.
Once - Other is a unique writing and a winner for science fiction fans. The author's compelling use and style of the English language requires complete concentration and even at that it is a rather distracting format. As a writer myself it took me a bit to get into the novel but the work and thought that went into this is impressive. It is compelling in it's own way but I feel it is a little disjointed in the message. All in all I believe this novel Once - Other is a book to be read and heeded. I might add that I am not particularly a fan of science fiction but I can appreciate the intent of the novel. The author holds a grand mastery of the English language and uses it well.

On it's own the story would be an enjoyable adventure well worth the read .But underlying the story you can see the essence of what the author is trying to impart to us.That of the love and importance of liberty and freedom in our lives . Through the main characters adventures in learning how each culture developed and grows we see in our own culture the mistakes and errors as well as the accomplishments .This is a must read on two levels. For the sheer enjoyment of a good read and an insight into the world we live in today .
As others have said, this is a blend of science fiction, adventure, politics & morality. While it took me a while to catch on to the authors style, the concepts on the structure of a truly free society are pearls worth the work to obtain. Lawrence Nysscchen's brings you to a world of unimaginable hardship, yet the inhabitants thrive, all the while living with a system of governance that actually works to advance a individuals personal goals. I really enjoyed it & look forward to his next effort!
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of survival. This is definitely an interesting and compelling read. The survival of the characters were dependent on the government. Some parts were harder to follow, and had to be read repeatedly to understand the meaning of what they are talking about, but the story worked. It was riddled with politics and ended up being a unique culture of the society portrayed in the story. There were twists and turns, and some of the story was very poetic but it added to the essence of the story. After reading this, I would read more of Nysschens's work.

I found this novel entertaining, enlightening and educational. The engaging story serves, to a large degree, as a backdrop for the author's societal and political beliefs. The parallels drawn between the worlds created between the pages of this book, and the current world we live in, are easily distinguishable and it's obvious the author cares, most passionately, about his adopted country and the ideals upon which it was originally founded.
This is by no means a Star Wars-type Sci-fi novel, full of battles in outer space, light sabers and exploding Death Stars - - although there is a fair amount of action within the story. Rather I found it to be more a “thinking man's” tale, designed to invite the reader to question much of what is going on in our current society.
The writing is eloquent, sometimes quirky (intentionally so) and quite often poetic. The author paints an imaginative, desert world (Here-Born) whose inhabitants speak a unique and quaint version of the English language. All-in-all a thoroughly enjoyable book.
