The Commentary on the Rule takes into account the long history of commentary on St. Benedict’s rule and discusses this history at length in the introduction. Each chapter has a selection of the rule, following the divisions of dates on which sections of the rule are read in monasteries, then a commentary on that section, followed by an application, through 72 chapters completing the entire Rule. The commentary makes use of the very lengthy Monastic Tradition, works of the Church Fathers, Eastern Monasticism, the Scholastics and others, as well as commentary on text criticism in regards to the original Latin of the rule itself.

This wonderful text, though it is intended for Benedictine Oblates, is a worthy resource for anyone that would like to know more about the rule of St. Benedict.

This is book is the resource for those trying to learn more about monastic life.

Commentary for Benedictine Oblates On the Rule of St Benedict edition by G A Simon Loenard Doyle Religion Spirituality eBooks

I purchased this book after initiating the process of becoming an Oblate at a Benedictine Priory during my last retreat there. For some reason, I didn't find the book all that helpful in the beginning. I put it down and just read the Rule itself for several weeks. But a few days ago I picked it up again and began reading the daily entries at my morning prayer time. It is an absolute treasure. Every day some little nugget of the commentary springs forward and I find myself pondering it for the rest of the day. Every day, I notice when I am doing the exact thing that St. Benedict cautions us against. It has been quite humbling to recognize just how often I need to repent. Which of course is the beauty of Benedictine practice. Because as we humble ourselves, we simultaneously (and rightly, of course) glorify God.

My normal practice is to read this commentary in the morning after praying Lauds. It is a beautiful way to start the day. Songs of praise and penitence followed by a short meditation on the Rule of St. Benedict. I have found this to be a powerful combination to inspire me to strive towards holiness. And while my nature often causes me to stumble, at least I am becoming more aware when I do.

A note about the edition: I was somewhat surprised by the high cost of this book. It is a standard trade edition paperback. I noticed, however, that the date of printing on the inside of the back cover was the day I ordered it. They are, in other words, custom printed. As I make my way through this book, I am finding myself treasuring it more and more each day. To me, that is worth every cent.

Commentary for Benedictine Oblates On the Rule of St Benedict edition by G A Simon Loenard Doyle Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

What can I say, except this is a superlative commentary on the Rule of St. Benedict, following the venerable way of reading the Rule and finishing it every 4 months. It is very understandable that I really wonder what passes for understandable in the mind of the one who rated this book a 1. Maybe that reviewer is used to the modern Benedictines, in which most are probably now far away from the original Benedictine fervor (excepting the traditional monasteries, like Le Barroux and Clear Creek, and Solesmes [maybe]). If you are a Benedictine oblate, attached to a traditional monastery like Clear Creek, you are very fortunate; do yourself a favor, and get this book.
Excellent book, arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Clearly written for Oblates as the title says, the commentary is the reason for the rule, and the application is practical aspects of it. The way the rule and the commentary and the application is divided into dated portions is perfect for daily meditation after Office of Readings, which I pray anywhere from 4-6 am. The only thing is that I wish I had ordered it in hardback, so the book would be more durable. The commentary has teachings from great Benedictine leaders in the past, mostly from the French language. I'm very glad I ordered it. It has become a valuable asset to my daily prayer.
Have been using this for daily study for a couple of weeks and love it. I find something to ponder in each reading. The only issue I have is that several pages in the middle of the book are significantly lighter than the rest - as if they were running out of ink. Not enough to cause problems reading it, just noticeable.
Prayerful and well-written exegesis of the Holy Rule specifically focused on "application" of the monastic guideline for Oblates who are making a serious effort to live the life of a disciple. Sections of the Rule are set forth in digestible segments for each day's study and practice. A "reflection" and "application" (how to use the Rule in the Oblate's own circumstances) section are also included. This is a worthy addition to any Oblate's commentary library.
This is a beautiful book written with commentary for each rule and a practical application along with it...which is so wholly monastic and is perfect for meditation; for those who want a deeper understanding of the spirit and mind of St. Benedict from the beginning and are very orthodox in disposition, this is a great book; keep in mind, it was written for oblates...those who have made a promise to a particular Benedictine monastery for life under the direction of a monk ...so one must be seriously committed to wanting to live their life in the spirit of St. Benedict in order for this book to be of any value. It's not a light read or for curiosity seekers.
This commentary is wonderful, there are no two ways about it. It is scholarly, yet remains very approachable. The resources used to compile both the commentary and the applications represent the best of faithful exegesis on the Holy Rule throughout the centuries, presented to a more modern audience. One of the major sources used is Dom Paul Delatte's excellent text, but applied directly to Oblates.

The introduction alone is almost worth getting this book as it presents a detailed and interesting breakdown of the history of Oblates in the Order of Saint Benedict. The actual readings and associated commentary are broken up in a daily cycle which allows one to read the entire book in 4 months, which is very nice as it works right into what Oblates are supposed to be doing anyway.

All in all, I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone looking to understand the application of the Rule of Saint Benedict within their lives as Oblates. This would also make a fantastic reference for Monks, Sister, or Nuns who might find themselves in the position of being an Oblate director or who are giving a retreat on the Holy Rule.

You will not be disappointed in this text. I cannot imagine anyone, who is legitimately interested in Benedictine Spirituality, who will not learn a great deal from this book. I have several commentaries and this is easily the best one I have read to date.
